M.U.L.E. for the IBM PCjr found

Hi there, thanks to the WoM forums I noticed that a new copy of M.U.L.E. for the IBM PCjr has surfaced and sold on eBay, for quite a high price: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150402775883. I am posting this message in the hope that the person who bought it would read this and get in contact with me, either using this website or contacting me via email: webmaster at worldofmule dot net. The IBM PCjr version of the game, developed by IBM (!), is incredibly rare, and the only "original" M.U.L.E. game which you can NOT play on an emulator yet because the original disk has not been copied yet to a modern PC file format. It would be a great service to the M.U.L.E. community if that game could be dumped and played on emulators.

Read about the various classic M.U.L.E. versions, including the IBM PCjr. one, here.

Regards and happy planet-mule'ing (you can find me there as "Eidolon"),

Several people have let me know by email that there is a M.U.L.E. easter egg in the new life-creation sim "Spore" by Electronic Arts/Maxis. When you engage in trade with an alien race in the space stage, in some cases, you can faintly hear the M.U.L.E. theme song, piped through in its original PC speaker glory. Hanzo has blogged about the easter egg here.

Mid this week, this site's hosting provider moved the site to much faster servers. But, something might have been broken during that move, as some people reported they cannot login anymore. If that happens to you as well, I'm very sorry - in that case, you have to use the "I forgot my password" link in the login box (top-left) to reset your password and choose a new one.
Some users have also reported that login works again without resetting the password if they tick the "remember me" checkbox in the login box.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Month of MULE - Part Three! UBeR's Net M.U.L.E. remake

Just when you thought "that's about it for M.U.L.E. news in March", there is another surprise, this time by fellow WoM user UBeR. Let's head over to the forums to download and discuss this one!

Oh, and please don't forget that you can use the WoM's calendar system to make appointments for online games - now M.U.L.E. online gaming is possible with the emulated Atari version ('quite' stable with the Kaillera framework, emulated C64 version (experimental with the new Vice version 1.21), and UBeR's new remake, using its own netplay framework!

March really is like MULE player heaven - too bad I personally can't enjoy it that much (yet), as I am busy in real life preparing a job-related move from Germany to Switzerland.

Kind regards and happy MULE'ing,
Goethe

Dani Bunten to be inducted into AIAS Hall of Fame

Although not yet officially announced, GameSpot is reporting that Dani Bunten, creator of M.U.L.E., is to be inducted into the Acadamy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame. This February at the D.I.C.E. Summit she will be joining a very short list of previous inductees that reads like a who's who of game development.

Sid Meier will be presenting the award.
Jim Rushing (of Ozark Softscape fame, one of the co-creators of M.U.L.E. and nowadays working at Electronic Arts) will be accepting the award on her behalf.

If anyone deserves to be admitted, it is a visionary like Dani Bunten, whose commendable dedication to expanding video gaming into a social activity, even if over vast distances through the use of modems, rather than a solitary one, spent alone in the dark, is as yet unmatched. Video games still have a long way to go, and while she may have been disappointed in the level of violence in many of today's games, the success of games like Counter-Strike and World of Warcraft, have proved that video games can be an excellent way for people to get together and socialize. Dani Bunten was radically ahead of her time exploring these possibilities.

Congratulations to Dani on achieving such well deserved recognition by the AIAS for her accomplishments in the industry, and the inspiration she's given to so many others. How unfortunate that she can not be so honored in person. Dani, you are missed, and will be remembered forever for your contributions to video gaming.

This neat little image I spotted in an article about China's economy in the German weekly DIE ZEIT sometime in 2004 or 2005. It visualises the Chinese economy as the "world's workbench". But I immediately thought, "this how a Chinese M.U.L.E. would look like!". Maybe not M.U.L.E., but D.R.A.G.O.N.?
Welcome to the NEW World of M.U.L.E.!

The World of M.U.L.E. has reopened! This time, not as the "simple" informative website which it used to be, but as an internet community platform for all M.U.L.E. fans.

This is my bow before Dani Bunten, honoring her vision of computer games as a means to bring people together instead of being a hobby for lonely geeks. That vision sounds commonplace? Keep in mind that she formulated that vision in 1982, years before the internet came by!

With the opening of the new site, I didn't yet find time to migrate all the old site's content, but try to compensate by adding some brand new exclusive content:

An extensive report on the alpha version of Son of M.U.L.E. game for the Genesis, a M.U.L.E. successor that unfortunately never got published

A vocal interpretation of the M.U.L.E. title theme made by the Swedish a capella band "Visa Röster"

A short story about the life on Irata (written by myself), trying to capture the spirit of M.U.L.E.

If you like M.U.L.E., please register on this site. You will be kept up to date on events in the M.U.L.E. world. Don't forget to put in your google earth location as well, and maybe post a short introduction in the forums at the appropriate place.

Since a few months, it has become possible to play the classic Atari 800 M.U.L.E. game with four human players via the internet. My good friend Adam runs a site dedicated to this cause. You can make good use my site's calendar function to make appointments for online M.U.L.E. tournaments.

The World of M.U.L.E. website is also the perfect place to start new projects related to M.U.L.E., thanks to the site's "Wiki" features.
Fan art, articles, reverse engineering efforts, development efforts... If you would like to contribute to this website by becoming an Author, please let me know!

But now, enjoy browsing the new World of M.U.L.E.! I hope you like it - I'd appreciate if you left some feedback in the site's forums.

Kind regards,
This is just to let you know that I haven't abandoned this site. Lots of new, interesting material got into my hands since the last update, and lots of new stories are to tell... Please bear with me until my vacation time in mid-December to bring all this online; before that, I'm just too busy with my job.
