An emulator is a computer program which can turn a modern PC (or Mac for that matter) into one of the historics home computers. An emulator mimics the functions of these old computers and enables to run programs for them.

Many hobbyist computer and game historians have made sure that the classic games from the past will not decay on cartridges and disks until. They have transferred the old disks and cartridges to the modern PC environment - they have created so-called disk images (in case of old floppy disks) and ROM images (in case of old cartridges).

Emulators can load those disk or ROM images - this enables you in the end to play those classic games again.
