A new M.U.L.E. for the Nineties that never was

Some history

The "Son of M.U.L.E." was in development by Dani Bunten in the early 1990'ies for the Sega Genesis video game console (known as Sega Mega Drive in Europe and Asia/Pacific). The game has never been published, but reached an alpha development stage. Dani did not complete it reportedly because EA insisted on adding "guns'n'bombs" to the gameplay. Dani didn't want to comply to that, which in the end led to the discontinuation of the project.

For some of Dani's statements concerning the Sega version of M.U.L.E., you can visit my memorial page which contains interviews and some of her statements about her softography. She also emailed me in 1997, mentioning the Sega version as well.

As the game has reached alpha development stage, it is playable in some form. Looking at the game, even though it is unfinished, is an interesting sneak peek into what Dani had in mind for a modernized version of MULE.

In the summer of 2001, I met people who were involved in the Sega Genesis M.U.L.E. project together with Dani, and still had a working prototype cartridge, of which a safety copy (ROM image) could be made. In the following picture you can see it running on a real Sega Genesis.

Thanks to the technical help of a fellow Sega Genesis specialist - Snorter from the Genesis Collective, I was able to dump the contents of the cartridge (create a so-called "ROM image" which can be used for Emulators and so preserved the game for the M.U.L.E. community.

I am still planning on offering the game for download here, but before that, some legal issues have to be solved (e.g. a copyright notice screen has to be added to the cart).

Game report

For now, you need to be satisfied with more screenshots and my report on the game.
This is what I have promised the community of this site since 2002, but only now got around to it... I have resolved to take better care of the M.U.L.E. community now - the new website you're looking at is the first step in that direction.
Now, have fun with the exclusive report!
