IBM M.U.L.E.

Hi all,

new here, but wanted to introduce myself and offer my services.

I came across the site looking for the IBM PC version of M.U.L.E - I honestly didn't think it even existed until I saw this page:

http://www.worldofmule.net/tiki-browse_image.php?imageId=64

One of my hobbies is converting old PC games to games that work under windows. (ok, maybe DOSbox is required, but you get the idea)

I've already converted the 1984 Epyx classic Jumpman
http://www.oldskool.org/pc/jumpman and MUSE software's Beyond Castle Wolfenstein
http://www.oldskool.org/pc/BCW

and am always up for another project.

If someone can get me in touch with the person who has the above linked disk or if anyone already has an image of that disk, I am all over getting this game resurrected.

thanks,
-jeff!

So there it was. After so many years, one finally came up on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150402775883

This of course happened during the 1 single, freaking week that I didn't go trawling for PCjr stuff on ebay. amazing. Not sure if I would have managed to be able to pay THAT kind of money for it, but I would most certainly love to have gotten my hands on that one.

The only hope is that with the price that one fetched, that maybe, just maybe, others will bring theirs out of the closet too.

Any chance that anyone here managed to get it?

I did dig through my email archive. It turns out that another person (not Travis) contacted me as well, telling me that he owns a PCjr MULE disk! Alas, this was ALSO several years ago. But let's see if HIS email still works...

Christian.

Any leads on this 2nd source?

A search for Travis McKay? turns up quite a few accounts on MySpace?. It being MySpace?, the vast majority of these accounts belong to teenagers. Any idea how old this Travis fellow is?

well, I've posted to my local (minneapolis) and chicago area craigslist looking for MULEs. It can't hurt to post, and it's free, so you never know.

Craigslist has a post checker thingy so I can't post the same message to multiple areas without getting the message banned. I think I can re-post after a few days, so I'll at least hit NY, LA and SF over the next few weeks.

Anyone here on myspace? Just wondering if travis j mckay might have signed up there. I've also managed to locate a travis j mckay living in california, but to be honest, I've been too shy to call him up and say "do you know anything about M.U.L.E?" lol

(dangit, meant for this to go at the end of the thread, sorry.)

I would certainly pay any price for it. ANY. :)

I was thinking the same thing. I might donate a small amount of money to a pool to help win the auction, but I would pay so much more to win it myself. That's the thing, if everybody goes in together on an auction, who gets the actual item? Donate it to this website? A raffle based on amount of money each person donated to the pool? Give it to me? Hmmm, give it to me ... that just might work!

yeah, that's exactly why I mentioned that I'm not interested in doing this for profit. If I find a copy, or someone loans me their copy, I'm going to let them know how much it's potentially worth and let them sell it. I just want the data-they can have the cash.

That does bring up a point though-if, by posting messages on various places like craigslist, alerting people that they may be sitting on something really valuable, we might be more likely to get some dug up.

Excellent. With 2 sources, maybe 1 of them will materialize...
If nothing else, at least this site/source is here so if anyone else ever comes along and offers a disk up, we can jump on it.

heh, when I came upon that original disk scan article that you'd posted, I saw the modification date was december of last year and figured that we'd have no problem getting ahold of travis now, only a few months later. I didn't realize that scan was years old. Alas.

As stated, I have all the tools required to dump the disk; I have a true PCjr and range of old computers from IBM XT up through 486, as well as a Central Point option board (I have quite the mad scientist's lab in my basement biggrin)

I'll gladly pay for postage and insurance both ways if I can borrow the disk for a day. Or, if the owner of the disk has access to a PC with a 5.25" drive I'll certainly work with them on getting an image made. I have no interest in doing any of this for profit; I'm only in it for game preservation-especially something this rare and interesting to such a large group of people.

So, yeah, let's find one of those disks! Maybe a mass posting on all the craigslists around the country might stir one up? Couldn't hurt, and it's free.

I know a guy who can make ethier a perfect image of the game or needs be a cracked version IF you can lay your hand on the disk?

Erm... This is exactly what Jeff is offering as well. He is now also looking for Travis, as I started again earlier this year after you told me you know someone who can dump the disk. :)

Let's cross our fingers.

I should have linked this link at the top of my post:
http://www.worldofmule.net/tiki-index.php?page=IBM+PCjr

I went digging for the guy who submitted the disk scan (travis j mckay) and sent him an email. No idea if I found the correct guy or not-the email address I found was pretty old. Haven't heard anything back yet unfortunately. I am admittedly rather excited about this and perhaps am jumping the gun in trying to contact people directly, hehe.

It would certainly be quite a find, but we only need to find one of them (which travis already has) and provided the disk is readable, the game can be salvaged and re-released to the world. It's just a matter of getting ahold of travis and seeing if he's up for making me an image to work with or letting me borrow the disk for a day.

travis, you are our only hope! biggrin

A copy of the IBM PCjr version of M.U.L.E. would be quite a find. As far as I know, no image of this disk has ever been made. This is almost certainly the rarest version of M.U.L.E., there are many unanswered questions about it.
